What Does "San Dao" Mean?

Heralded by historians the “second most influential thinker in Chinese history” and “one of the most influential people” in the last millennium, Zhu Xi (朱熹) had this to say about learning: “余尝谓,读书有三到,谓心到,眼到,口到。心不在此,则眼不看仔细,心眼既不专一,却只漫浪诵读,决不能记,记亦不能久也。三到之中,心到最急。心既到矣,眼口岂不到乎?

(Interpretation 翻译:我曾经说,读书有三道,心到,眼到,口到。心不在这儿,那么就看不仔细,心眼不一致,只能漫不经心地读,不会记住,就算记住也不会太久。三到之中,心到最重要。心都到了,眼睛与嘴怎么不会到呢 ?)

At San Dao Chinese Studio, our mission is to engage each and every student’s heart and mind in the learning process, so that they can master Chinese language not just as a subject but as a communication language that will benefit them in their every day life.

More About Chen Lao Shi

After teaching stints at Kong Hwa School and St. Andrew’s Junior School, Chen Lao Shi left civil service and engaged in full-time tutoring so as to dedicate more time into customizing learning materials for students from various backgrounds and levels.

Having opportunities to guide students in their journey of learning Chinese language throughout their formative years is another major attraction that led Chen Lao Shi to make the switch.

Till date, he has more than 12 years of teaching experience, coaching students mainly from upper Primary to Secondary levels. Towards the end of 2018, Chen Lao Shi branched out from 1-1 private tutoring and started some group class tutoring so as to reach out and aid more students in their learning of Chinese Language.

Chen Lao Shi applies a student-centered approach when delivering lessons and acts as a facilitator rather than an authoritative teacher, promoting self-learning; self-actualization and critical thinking skills in students during the process.

Student's Results

2023

Primary 6 (Raffles Girls' Primary School)

This student joined the group class after Pri 5 EOY exam. The targets were to make the breakthrough from AL2 and Merit. Glad she managed to do it for both CL and HCL!

2023

Secondary 4 (Hwa Chong Institution)

Common Test 1 (compo writing)’s 33/60 –> EOY’s 42/60; Common Test 2 (Paper 2)’s 33/80 –> EOY’s 49/80. My evaluation after this student joined for lessons in March this year was, B3 is a realistic target with ~8 months left (vs. his usual C5/C6 grading). Glad that he has been making positive strides.

2023

Secondary 4 (Hwa Chong Institution)

This student joined the group class in May this year. It was clear he has the potential to obtain higher grades, the challenge was to achieve consistency and bridge the gap. Hopeful that my “prediction” will come true next Jan when O Level results are released.
